Of all the tribes in the lower Omo Valley, the Hamer are the largest and the most fashionable. This young woman is the second or third wife, her status is identifiable by the plain metal necklace made of iron. Hamer men are allowed up to three wives and the first wife is recognised by wearing a Torque necklace. Hamer women take great pride in their appearance. They are well known for having a bob-fashioned hairstyle twisted in red ochre.
